Here is a brief background of our story: It started in seventh grade when we were assigned to do a "Change the World Project" (community service every month all year.) At first we really didn't want to do it, but then we came up with some ideas regarding elders. We started out with helping at the senior center and other places similar to that, but felt we could do more. Julia's grandfather has Alzheimers, and it has greatly affected him and her family. Julia's great grandmother also had Alzheimers, so it is something her family knows well. Sam's great grandmother had dementia, a disease similar to Alzheimer's. Since Sam and I had already started working together for a few months, we decided to become more involved in the Alzheimers Association with events such as the walk, meetings at the state house, and story times. In seventh grade we dabbled in those subjects I have to say, but eighth grade is where it all changed.

Starting that fall of 2014, we did the Alzheimers Walk for Awareness. What you do is make a  team on the website of who is doing the walk, and raise money to donate. For a few months we made our page available for anyone to donate, and we made over 2,000 dollars. It really was a great feeling to know that people would take the time to donate to the cause. Then we carried on through the year and did other events such as a story time in Burlington, Vermont held by the Association with some men who have Alzheimers, and their wives. It was so sweet to hear everyone's stories about the disease, and how they still are in a loving relatinship no matter what happens. Just because they loose memories, doesn't mean all their love is gone.

In April of 2015 we went on WDEV VT radio with Eric Micheals, and talked about what we have been doing all year. From events, to how we feel about the disease, what steps we want to take, and more. It was really nice of him to feature us on his morning show, and we hope to come back again! Now it is almost the end of eighth grade year, and we feel so accomplished.Sam and I are going to different schools next year, and it might be hard to carry on what we have been doing for two years. We definitely hope that both of us can carry on speaking out about Alzheimers, and changing the world.
